Harness Fit

All our harnesses are custom made to ensure that your horse gets a proper fit. A properly fitting harness does not wear excessive and does not irritate the horse. Our harnesses are adjustable within certain weight ranges. If you plan to use the same harness on several horses, please specify a weight range according to the following size categories:

  1. Pony Harnesses, for animals weighing 800 lbs. or less, are adjustable within a 200 lb. range. Example ranges: 400 to 600 lbs. or 600 to 800 lbs.
  2. Regular Horse Harnesses, for animals weighing 800 to 1400 lbs., are adjustable within a 300 lb. range. Example ranges: 900 to 1200 lbs. or 1100 to 1400 lbs.
  3. Draft Horse Harnesses, for animals weighing 1400 lbs. and up, are adjustable within a 400 lb. range. Example ranges: 1400 to 1800 lbs, or 1600 to 2000 lbs.

Measuring Your Horse

How to Measure a Horse for HarnessWhether you specify a weight range or you buy a harness for a particular horse, we need specific measurements to ensure a proper fit. The ratio of head, girth, body length, and weight varies greatly between breeds. If you want the same harness for two different sized horses, please send measurements for at least one horse and specify the weight range desired.

When you order a harness, we need to know the breed and age of the horse plus each of the following measurements:

  1. Length of head—from base of ears to bottom of nose.
  2. Girth—circumference of the body about 4" behind the front legs.
  3. Body length—straight line from point of shoulder to buttocks.
